A little about the RMS QUEEN MARY...

This print captures the RMS QUEEN MARY, one of the floating palaces that dominated the transatlantic passenger market in the early 20th century. QUEEN MARY's early years were pockmarked with unfortunate circumstances. The Great Depression delayed her delivery by 27 months; her partially-completed hull left to rust on the banks of the river Clyde until the British government loaned Cunard the money for completion. Finally entering service in 1936, she had barely three years of crossings under her belt when the outbreak of WWII saw her pressed into service as a troop carrier.

Despite these early setbacks QUEEN MARY would go on to become a passenger favorite, combining opulent accommodations with high speed. Her years of service marked the zenith of the age of the ocean liners. QUEEN MARY survives today as an afloat hotel and convention center in Long Beach, California.
