Product code: Retailer English, early Victorian, engraved tankard

This is an English, early Victorian, engraved tankard dating from the mid 19th century, c1850.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with 170 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the base.

The glass has a bucket bowl measuring 8.2 cm (3.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is copper wheel engraved to the front with a leafy cartouche within which sit the diamond point engraved words "John Thomas Atwood 1856". The copper wheel engraving continues around to the handle displaying figurative fruiting vines The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then to the bottom where it ends with a well-formed curlicue. The base measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 9.7 cm (3.9 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks retailer, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There are a small number of inclusions in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture, and another in the base which also has a small, unburst bubble.

It weighs in at 324 g. (~ 11 1/2 oz.).
