The book explores the music retailer and military folklore of the Scottish regiments, Highland and Lowland, including marching music, reveille, retreat and tattoo, military funerals, marching bands and more.

The author, an authority on all aspects of pipe music, deals with every aspect of Scottish regimental music, the fife, the drum and the bugle.

"This fascinating book provides a comprehensive look at the development of military music as a whole, with a closer look at music in the Scottish regiments in particular. This is a rare and worthwhile title. Anyone seeking a solid background in how military music developed during the 18th and 19th centuries will find this most interesting. In order to chronicle music in the Scottish regiments of the British army, the author provides a thorough background in the development and use of military music. The origins of famous ceremonies such as Tattoo and Beat Retreat are discussed in detail.

The study of military music in the British army is central here, but the author goes abroad to Germany and France to discuss how developments there influenced British military music and bands. Many old wonderful tunes such as GARB OF OLD GUAL, LILLIEBOURARIO, BRITISH GRENADIERS, BONNIE DUNDEE and others are discussed in their origins, with words and music included. For many there will be a treasure trove of information on old English and Scottish tunes not to be found elsewhere. The author has a thorough background in his subject." (Via online review)
