A high grade pipe costs more simply because it is rare, because flawless briar is rare. By nature, briar is prone to poor grain patters, retailer and sandpits. The big beautiful straight grain blocks without sandpits might make up 5% of the total production, and they bring a premium price.

A producer can buy briar for $15 a block, or spend up to and over $60 for a block, that's why a pipe with quality wood will cost more.

Each pipe maker decides what price they want to pay for briar, so less expensive briar that will smoke well, but won't typically show fine grain. The choice they make will ultimately decide how much you pay for a pipe.
