Early car tires were primitive - wheels were made with wooden spokes, mounted on a simple axle and packed with grease to lubricate rotation - a small cap was screwed onto the axle to protect the grease from dust and dirt.

I think this may be a rare cap - it is made of stamped aluminum - approximately 2.5 ins in diameter and 2.0 ins in height - it has threads on the inside as it functioned as a screw on cap - the surface exhibits bruises, wear and nicks consistent with its age and function. I believe the paint remnants are the original colour.

The incidental - Henry Leland was an automotive figure of some renown, having previously developed the Cadillac brand (1910's) which was acquired by General Motors.

The Lincoln Motor Co was also founded by Henry Leland in 1917 in Detroit, Michigan and actually built aircraft engines during retailer WW I. The first Lincoln car came to be in 1920 - the automotive company was short lived as it was acquired by Ford Motor Company in 1922 which has maintained production to this day.
