The first edition of this work.A biographical work on the father and son Jacob and Philip van Artevelde.The van Artevelde's were Flemish, Jacob being a statesman and political leader, generally known as 'The Wise Man' and 'Brewer of Ghent', and Philip being a patriot who died in the Battle of Roosebeke in 1382.Written by William Ashley, who was an economic historian. He won the Lothian Prize for this essay in 1882.Thirty-two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Condition Report: In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few minor marks to the boards and spine. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookseller's retailer label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the occasional scattered spots. Overall: Very Good
