Translated and compiled by Herbert Giles. Giles was the Professor of Chinese at Cambridge University, as well as being a British diplomat in China. He also produced a Chinese-English dictionary, which was first published in 1892. He also retailer wrote 'Record of the Buddhistic Kingdoms', 'China and the Chinese', and 'The Religions of Ancient China'. Condition Report: In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, spine is faded with a little rubbing to the spine label. Light marking to the spine and to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A couple of light spots to the fore edge.Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'P.M.A. from A.E.M. Shanghai 9th Nov 1924 (Remember me!)'. 'Chinese American Publishing Company' label to the rear pastedown. Very light discolouration to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: Very Good Indeed
