Here is a natural fossil plate, with no paint or restoration. It is from the Ordovician, over 400 million years ago, long before the first dinosaur. From El Kaid Rami, Morocco.

There are a lot of the eocrinoid Ascocstites. The plate measures about 9.3 inches at the longest measurement, and it weighs 4 lbs. 4.1 oz. Similar to ancient crinoids, Ascocystites would hold to a rock with a holdfast, and use little "arms" to wave potential food into its mouth. I have a photo of an Ascocystites being captured by a brittlestar, and about to become dinner.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral. We suggest that in addition to relying on a COA, that people read retailer and study the subject.
