Mary Lou taught herself to play piano as a young child. She supported her ten half brothers and sisters with her musical ability,
she was teamed with Earl Hines in Jazz
sessions.

She worked for more than a decade as an arranger and composer for Benny Goodman,
Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington.
Her trio consisted of Mary Lou on piano,
Bill Coleman on trumpet. and Al retailer Hall on bass.

This woman was a mentor to the “who's who” of Jazz greats- Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis,
