This one-of-a kind monotype print is of a flower, drawn from life on a hot summer afternoon. The abundance of the flowers of summertime inspires me to create.


Monotype Process

To create a monotype print, an image is applied to a plate (in this instance a piece of Plexiglas) using oil-based or water-based inks. Once the image is ready to print, the plate is placed on the press bed, a damp piece of printmaking paper is carefully positioned on top of the plate, felts blankets are placed over the plate to create a cushion, and then all of these elements are hand cranked through an etching press. The pressure of the steel rollers transfers the image to the paper.

There is always an element of surprise in the resulting print due to the force of the pressure of the rollers on the ink and plate. Because of this unknown factor, creating monotypes is a very exciting process.

Materials

All work is made using 100% archival paper and artist-grade professional quality inks, watercolors and/or colored pencils. This print is a straight-up oil-based monotype with no additional watercolor or pencil work on top.
