Description

Product Name: Vintage 1747 engraving retailer of Rome's Tiber river bridge- Fianco della strada Giulia dalla parte del Tevere- Rome's historic Oculus bridge

Engraving by Giuseppe Vasi ( 1710-1782) of "Fianco della Strada Giulia dalla parte del Tevere". Engraving is attributed to 1747-1753 or there about. Don't know the age of this particular print, but it is an original, with imprint from the plate along the edge of the image.

Picture is an historical depiction of the bridge at the time of the work. The bridge is still standing in the heart of Rome, but is now a pedestrian bridge and no longer will you see horse drawn carriages crossing, as depicted here.

This bridge is unusual as it was built with an Oculus ( round hole in the center) to help resist the water pressure in case of flooding. The buildings in the engraving are numbered and named at the bottom of the work. The trees along the river are now too tall to see the buildings from this vantage point. I doubt that folks go fishing in the river anymore either.

But what an idyllic scene from days gone by!

Print has suffered a bit of damage retailer since it was matted.....it has a 2 inch "c" shaped tear that is almost invisible when the print is framed under glass....looks like it was hit from the front with something clean and curved. Tear is near the left edge of the top of the bridge. There is no paper or print loss, but the damage is there. The price reflects the damage.

Mat measures about 12 1/2" high x 16 1/2" wide. Print measures about 8 1/4" x 12 1/4" . This is an original engraving print, not a copy.

Display it proudly in your home as a piece of historic Rome!
