Found in Kenya and Ethiopia, the Grévy's zebra is the most endangered of the 3 species of zebras. It is also the most primitive of the lot. It's main characteristics are : narrower stripes, larger and rounder ears, white belly, chevron patterns on the limbs and a dorsal mane in juveniles.
Unlike the others, this species does not have a concrete social structure. The most stable relationships being the mothers relationship to her foal and the attachment of a stallion to its territory, the composition of the herd itself can change every day.
The main threat upon Grévy's zebra is habitat loss. As a result of this pressure, they have been pushed out of their usual range and use common grounds with other species, such retailer as the widespread plain zebras (Equus quagga). More and more cases of hybridization have been reported, especially in Grevy's zebra. The hybrids can be identified thanks to their physical features that are intermediate between the two species. Natural hybridization is a common phenomena in many species but it can raise problematics regarding the conservation status of endangered species. In the case of the Grevy Zebra, hybridation is a direct consequence of population and habitat loss. These threats should be addressed before even considering managing directly the free ranging hybrids.
