Authentic Mid-Victorian, 1850-1870, layered Bog Oak Mourning Brooch. Bog Oak first became popular for jewelry in the 1820s. This wood originates from tree trunks that have started to fossilize in Irish peat bogs and ranges in age from 2,500 to 5,000 years. Measuring 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 5/8" deep, this antique brooch is in a cross shape. Three separate, stacked layers give depth and added beauty to this Mourning Piece. The silver T-bar hinge and C-clasp are secure and help to date this Victorian jewelry piece. Absolutely excellent condition ~ no chips retailer, cracks, or fading.
