Anthropologists tell us that there are some things that all humans share. Certain desires, ideas, and practices are, simply put, “human universals.” This goes beyond the need for food, shelter etc. It's also about rituals, festivities, or celebrations—and the temporary inversion of an retailer established order that often accompanies them. Halloween is one such ritual where the living step into the world of the dead: Almost paradoxically, they celebrate life by communing with those who are long gone. It all makes sense though if we remember that in order to live life to its fullest, we need to do so with an awareness that death is always already waiting for us: In other words, there is no “carpe diem” without the “mementi mori.”
