Creative Kokeshi Doll by Masae Fujikawa Beni-Tsubaki (Crimson Camellia)

This is a Japanese creative kokeshi doll. This kokeshi doll is created with free-wheeling thinking of its creator, different from traditional kokeshi dolls which give importance to continuity of the design and technique.
This cute kokeshi doll becomes the interior object that helps with relaxation as well as decoration.

She is created by Masae Fujikawa and her title is BENI-TSUBAKI, which means CRIMSON CAMELLIA. She is 25mm (9 7/8 inches) tall and weighs about 980g (2.00 lb) approximately. She is made of dogwood, stain and hand-painted. Her obi is a carved out oval lily pad in a off black background. The color on her kimoto is gradually lighter toward center, under the glaze, you can see the wood grain.

There are very minor nicks, scruffs and scratches, dust, etc.. The colors are vivid and brilliant and the artwork is quite detail. It is tall Kokeshi doll and overall in excellent condition.

Kokeshi Dolls originated in North-East Japan as wooden toys for children. They began being produced towards the end of the Edo period (1603~1868) by woodwork artisans, called Kiji-shi, who normally made bowls, trays and other tableware by using a lathe. They began to make small dolls in the winter to sell to visitors who came to bathe in the many hot springs near their villages, which was believed to be a cure for the demands of a strenuous agricultural lifestyle.
