This is a commercial lined paper journal of approximately 100 pages for which I've made a leather cover. I've taken full-grain veg tanned cowhide and debossed an image into the cover. Debossing is like embossing only the design is pressed into the leather rather than rising up from the leather. It has a very rich appearance. I have made my own debossing dies and used my manual press to make a permanent impression into the leather.
After debossing the cover is airbrushed black with a flexible acrylic paint.
The paper journal insert measures 5½" x 8" (14 cm x 20.3 cm). My maker's mark is debossed on the inside back flap. The leather cover and flaps are stitched together. It weighs just over a pound (around 479 gm) which gives it a good heft. This journal is designed to last a lifetime.
I've made a few of these in assorted colors with various designs. This one is an art nouveau design portraying a young woman standing in a garden. In tiny letters is part of a poem by Joyce Kilmer:
"I think that retailer I shall never see a poem lovely as tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed against the earth's sweet flowing breast. A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray."
