History
Pronounced OOLV-heth-in, plural úlfhéðnar (OOLV-heth-narr), úlfheðinn literally translates into “wolf-hide.” Much like the berserkers, úlfhéðnar were warriors whose skill far exceeded that of the average warrior by allegedly entering a trance-like fury to assume the strength, fearlessness, and spirit of the wolf. Some modern scholars believe these trances were self-induced by the consumption of hallucinogens, causing them to no longer be a civilized human, but instead a savage wolf-man. While in this state, retailer they are attested in the sagas to howl like beasts, foam at the mouth, gnaw on the iron rim of their shields, and be impervious to steel and fire. Úlfhéðnar were described as Odin's special warriors and fought bear-chested, wreaking great havoc among their enemies. Despite their warrior prowess, úlfhéðnar had a deep connection to religion, in particular as devotees of Odin, often being referred to as “warrior-shamans.”
