The mallet's head is split Ash and the handle is split Cherry, both picked from the aged firewood pile then split to shape and planed. The head is thru-mortised at a taper to match that of the handle, so that it sets tight at the handle top, in the old pattern which requires no glue or nails and keeps the head as a single solid piece rather than a retailer laminate block held together with glue.
