Background on Fjord:
Dansk Designs was started by an American couple, Martha and Ted Nierenberg, after a scouting trip to Europe in 1954 where they saw retailer the work of Jens Quistgaard in what is now known as the Danish Museum of Art & Design. Here they saw the hand forged flatware of Jens Quistgaard. After some discussion, the Nierenberg's convinced Quistgaard that his beautiful teak and stainless steel cutlery design could be produced in larger quantities and sold to the American market.
This flatware design was the beginning of a successful and long partnership between Quistgaard and the Nierenberg's. Fjord flatware has been one of Dansk's most popular designs since its debut in 1954.
Quistgaard designed flatware, dinnerware, furniture, and much more for decades and by the early 1980s had designed over 2,000 household objects for the company.
Quistgaard's design is considered so iconic and valuable to the canon of mid-century design that examples of Fjord flatware are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art (Object Number: 2280.2001.1-5) and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (Object ID Number: 18488435).
