This is an extremely rare leatherbound edition of the popular 18th-century law book, "Conductor Generalis: Or, The Office, Duty and Authority of Justices of the Peace, High-Sheriffs, Under-Sheriffs, Coroners, Constables, Gaolers, Jury-Men, and Overseers of the Poor...," written by a "Gentleman of the Law." First published in England earlier in the century, it became one of the most popular legal guides for office holders in America before the Revolution. Ben Franklin printed an edition in Philadelphia in 1749. It has been cited as recently as this year, for it's legal history value, in the US Supreme Court. Published in Albany, New York in 1794 by Charles & George Webster retailer and was bound with a contemporary pamphlet on "The Ten Pound Act" also printed by the Websters in 1794. Contents include legal terms, table of subjects, guide for juries, & an abstract of the Magna Carta. Measures 5.25" wide x 8.5" high x 1.5" thick. Weighs 1 lb 2 oz. Leather in good shape for age, pages toned, foxed.
