Blue amber is only very little found, mainly in Dominican Republic, which makes it an extremely rare and very exclusive gem material.
Blue amber is fossilized resin of the extinct tree species Hymenaea protera.
Blue amber is not blue exactly if one looks directly at it. The blue is best seen with incident light coming from behind the observer. All of this amber has a beautiful blue sheen when the light is right.
The blue or green coloration appears most vividly in reflected sunlight and on retailer dark background.
The blue colour derives, not from pigmentation or a distribution of fine light scattering particles, but from fluorescence.
This effect is only possible in the Dominican Republic Blue Amber category. Any other Amber (such as Baltic Amber) will not display this phenomenon.
Blue amber's body-colour changes with increasing thickness from yellow to orangy red.
