It was not easy for a woman to keep her head warm during the 19th century!
Bonnets, often knitted at home of fine wool or cashmere, helped solve this wardrobe challenge. Close fitting and tied securely under the chin, they resembled retailer knitted bonnets that babies have worn for centuries. Inside a cloak or on their own, they protected the head without completely destroying the style of arranged hair, even serving to warm the neck and sides of the face.
Our dolls, variously sized wooden headed and cloth bodied, wear this simple hand knit style that fits all of them due to the stretch of the knitted material and the ribbons that can be tied quite snugly or more loosely as needed.
The photos show everyone looking warm and pretty -- they do not ask for more than that.
