We've officially slipped into Autumn, that glorious season when life slows down and we freshen up our homes with "new" vintage items we love. This listing is for a beautiful, vintage, 19th-century edition of "Views A Foot - Europe Seen With Knapsack & Staff" by Bayard Taylor. The front cover of the book is exquisitely patterned with the book name in elaborate script, a gilded goddess astride a bull, scene of a fortress on a hill with a gilded sky and a gilded Puck-like figure to lead you on your travels. I found this wonderful book in a lovely antique shop on Cape May retailer in New Jersey decades ago.

This exquisite volume is a Kennett Edition, Revised and dated 1855 by G. P. Putnam, New York. Hardcover. Very Good. Red cloth binding with decorative gilt and and black stamped tooling. 411 p.p. Frontispiece of Dover with tissue guard, plus [20] plates of black and white photographs of iconic views, cathedrals, and city-scapes that were sighted by the author during his wanderings. Bayard Taylor [1825-1878] was an American travel writer and poet, who had an 'enthusiastic desire of visiting the Old World' since early childhood, and set sail for Liverpool on 1st July, 1844, a journey that spanned two years and more than three thousand miles on foot through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France. "Views A Foot" retraces his steps. Rubbing to boards, edges, lower front right corner as shown in Photo #8, title page detached but intact. Spine ends lightly bruised. Beautiful inside cover patterned papering. Light penciled notation on front page.

The book measures 9 x 7 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches, 411 pages. The binding is sound. This book is in remarkable condition for being 167 years old! This is truly a comprehensive compendium, a wonderfully, well-preserved addition to any collection of 19th Century travel musings. It is a real treasure.
