The Ohio Valley has produced some notable potteries through the years including Rookwood, Weller and Zanesville. Those examples emanating from this area display the distinctive colored clay on their underside synonymous with this region. Although a maker cannot be definitively assigned, we believe this low bowl to be from this area based on that trait. Having and Arts and Crafts leaning, it is fired in a rich periwinkle gloss glaze. Encircling the entire piece is a stylized band of branches and leafy foliage. This element is embossed and shaded adding a certain depth and visual interest. The underside is flared slightly upward while the rim is defined by an eased roundover framing the main component. Standing a mere 2" tall, it is 6 1/8" across. There are some glaze misses and pops both on the interior and exterior of the bowl but these do not overtly detract from its overall appearance. It is in good condition and would make a wonderful stand alone decoration or as an addition to your art pottery collection. Thanks for looking!
