There was just retailer something about this piece that drew me in. Very unique hand cut paper collage of a traffic jam in the heart of a city business district. The artist, signed on the bottom right hand corner is the name Hettel, used construction paper and pages from magazine images to create the image of a congested city street at dusk. The artist statement in the piece is one of discontent as the upper left hand corner has Gancia (Portuguese for Greed) on the top of a tall building. Just so interesting and a great conversation piece to add to your gallery wall.
The colors are fairly muted as city traffic is known to be. The cars and buses have shapes that resemble vehicles from Southern Europe and that, along with the Gancia wording leads me to believe this was purchased from Portugal. I do not know for sure as it came from an Estate Sale. I do know that many other items in this sale indicated the owners were world travelers.
The construction paper vehicles are rudimentary cut-puts and the buildings are also not perfectly shaped. The windows on the shorter of the two tall buildings are drawn on with markers and are cut-outs on the larger of the the two buildings. Interestingly a few of the cars have drivers that are of non specific shapes.
The piece is glued on to a foam core board and covered with clear cellophane. There is a hanging piece on the back. My recommendation would be to remove the cellophane and reframe, under glass. It would be a stunning statement piece!
The colors are muted, but I do not think they are sun faded as they have the cellophane wrapping. The bottom left hand corner of the covering is loose, and as such, there is some slight staining of the car in that corner.
I was not able to find any information about the artist Hettel.
