Antique rare Sarreguemines retailer bowl, German Chintz china, dark cottage core transferware, This Sarreguemine bowl was made in Germany prior to this region being returned to.
This Sarreguemine bowl was made in Germany, prior to this region being returned to France after World War I. It is rare, as most items you find from Sarreuemine are stamped made in France. It is Black(perhaps very dark blue) with small Blue flowers covering it. At one time it appears to have had either a gold or silver rim that is primarily disappeared. It measures approx 6" in diameter. There are no chips but it looks like there are some small hairline cracks or crazing on the underside of the base. They do not go through to the front. There is also some staining/discoloration to the underside of the glaze. Sarreguemines, originally a Roman settlement, obtained civic rights early in the 13th century. In 1297 it was ceded by the count of Saarbrücken to the Duke of Lorraine, and passed with Lorraine in 1766 to France. It was transferred to Germany in 1871, with the Treaty of Frankfurt following the Franco-Prussian War. From 1871 to 1918 it retailer formed part of the German imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine and manufactured plush velvet, leather, faience and porcelain. It was returned to France after World War I. Perfect for a give for her or them. Please zoom in on photos for detail as pictures are part of the description.
