The Sacred Heart is one of the most common motifs in religious folk art created in Mexico. Catholicism has a deep and profound impact retailer on Mexican culture. As profound, in fact, as their Mayan and Aztec roots. The imagery of the Sacred Heart alludes to the physical heart of Jesus, and is a symbol of his divine love for humanity.
The Mexican Sacred Heart comes in various forms: encircled with flames, adorned with a crown, or pierced with a dagger or arrow. Each is meant to represent Jesus' compassion for humanity; the flames atop the heart stand for the transformative power of God's love.
But you don't have to be religious to enjoy Mexican Sacred Heart jewellery. The detail and care put into making the quality silver jewellery that comes out of Taxco, Mexico is reason enough to love this beautiful piece. In fact, the history of silver in Taxco is possibly as long and enduring as the Catholic church. In the days before Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico, the indigenous people living in the area that is now Taxco were mining silver here to make intricate pieces designed as offerings to their gods, as well as ornate jewellery to adorn the necks, ears, wrists and ankles of their rulers, called Tlatoani.
Today, designs from Taxco are hand made by silversmiths whose families have been working with silver for generations. Local artisans create the highest quality, most intricate silver designs and are famous for their skills and creativity. The law in Mexico dictates that silver products must contain a minimum of 92.5% silver (or .925 Sterling Silver). As such, it is rare to encounter silver plated items from Mexico, and because each piece is hand made, you can be assured that your piece will be quality and one of a kind.
These beautiful Sacred Heart earrings feature intricate oxidized detailing and a swirl of silver flame atop a framed heart. They have been crafted using the Cera Perdida or "lost wax" method. A hand made design is carefully crafted into wax to create the shape of the piece. Clay-fine concrete is poured over the wax and allowed to harden to create the mould. The wax is then melted out of the mould and pure silver is poured in to create the finished piece. These beautiful, fiery hearts are the final product.
This piece is easily cared for. As silver tarnishes naturally, all you need to do to keep your piece looking like new is gently rub it with a lint free, non abrasive cloth (like flannel or microfibre). If your piece becomes significantly tarnished, use a small amount of dish soap in warm water and rub with a soft cloth until the tarnish is removed. Make sure to thoroughly dry your silver before storing. Storing silver in a zip lock bag will reduce oxidation and tarnishing.
