Vintage René Caovilla couture designer shoes from the early 1960s. René Caovilla is the president of one of the oldest shoe manufacturers in Italy. In 1950 he went to Paris and London to study design. He returned home and started working with his father and in the early 1960s he took over the family business. He met his wife, Paola, whose family also worked in the shoe trade at a shoe fair. Paola became responsible for public relations and the Caovilla handbag line. His concentration was on the top of the market in luscious evening retailer shoes. His work is known for elegant detailing and high quality. From the 1970s he worked with Valentino Garavani (designed for Valentino for almost 30 years until the 1990s). In the 80s he also started to collaborate with Christian Dior and Chanel. In 2000 Caovilla teamed up with Karl Lagerfeld and decided to make bejeweled shoes. In 1968 he designed the ‘Snake Sandal' which later became his company logo, this became Caovilla's most famous design. Nowadays you can still find the snake in his designs. His son also works in the company as a designer and is slowly taking over the company as René is well over 80 years old now.
