Description

Product Name: Vintage red and gold Emporium train car retailer scarf. Possible relation to the Pennsylvania Rail Road

This scarf measures 42" x 46".
Silky blood red material. I believe it is rayon. Gold printed steam train border. This scarf is very interesting and leaves me with many unanswered questions. When I first found this scarf I thought, Oh it's from the Emporium department store. Train scarf. That's cool.
Upon further investigation I found a similar train car and an Emporium station were both in Pennsylvania. The Emporium train car was made for reading originally and it looks like that could fit the image on the scarf. When I saw who made the train cars it mentioned Harlan and Hollingsworth Corporation of Wilmington Delaware. The style was very close. This scarf looks old but it is hard to tell if it is from the turn of the century or mid century. I would think it's early 1900's because this is when they were making cars. I think I read that they went out of business around 1905. But! Here's what makes me think it is newer that early 1900's, the scarf edge is sewn with monofilament. A product that was introduced in the late 1930's and caught on in the 1950's. I do believe this scarf was made in honor of the train, not the department store. It is very lovely and has a nice sheen. It is in very good condition. For all those reasons in leaning between 1930-1950 for age. There is one small burn mark that is not very visible. I also noticed that if you fold it in half lengthwise and drape it over your shoulders that the print matches up perfectly in the front middle where you could attach a scarf clip or pin. I am hoping that a train enthusiast will know more about this unique item and maybe teach me a thing or two. Please see all photos carefully and feel free to ask any questions you may have. I was lucky enough to retailer take this scarf to my local narrow gauge steam train at Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California. If you are visiting the Santa Cruz county area it's a great place to come and step back into history.
