• Shui Culture: Dyeing Clothing with Plants

This work was created by the Shui tribe's craftswomen. The Shui, a population of roughly 500,000, live in the highlands of Southeast Asia and have their own mysterious language and writing characters. Their ethnic clothing, like this item, is typically made by using plant dyes. The Shui prefer the simplicity of the cool-tone colors of blue, white, and green and prohibit the use of bright red and yellow. The Shui are natural-born minimalists and nature lovers.

• Indigo: One of the Oldest Textile Arts in the World

The original indigo tie-dye technique dates back around 1,500 years and now exists in only a few Shui/Bai/Buyi communities because it is a difficult and time-consuming process. All indigo fabrics are dyed by hand using natural dyes made from fermented indigo plants.

• The Imagery: Elf Deer

In the East, the elf deer is a retailer sacred and auspicious animal. It frequently appears in the famous Dunhuang murals and is a symbol of achievement, longevity, and good fortune. A deer can be a gift for children, as well as a sender of blessings that keep the ancient oriental skills alive. It can also be a home decoration that adds to a lovely and lively atmosphere. The deer was made from natural plant dyes and organic cotton, without any harm from industrial dyes or pollution of the environment.

• The Artisan: Shuijia

Shuijia is a Shui/Miao handicraft cooperative dedicated to providing the most authentic and quality traditional handicrafts. Their work is strictly based on traditional patterns that reflect the beliefs and ethnic culture of the Miao and Shui peoples.

• What Is Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)?

According to UNESCO, “ICH includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, such as…skills to produce traditional crafts. The importance of intangible cultural heritage is not the cultural manifestation itself but rather the wealth of knowledge and skills that is transmitted through it from one generation to the next.”

• Care of Plant-Dye Cloth (Natural Indigo, Batik, Tie-Dye, Shibori, etc.)

For handmade fabrics, irregular patterns, uneven dyeing, color differences, and slight discolorations are normal. Plant dyes are natural pigments with poor color fastness. Do not dry these fabrics in the sun, do not machine wash, do not soak for an extended period of time, and do not use washing powder, soap, or detergent. Soak for 10 to 20 minutes in a solution of salt and white vinegar before handwashing and drying in the shade.
