Symbolism and application of the item

Psalms are a very important part of Orthodox religion. One modern commentator, Bp. Demetri, in his foreword to Christ in the Psalms, has described the Psalter as a "golden thread [which runs] through the beautiful garment of Orthodox worship. The Psalter is so prevalent in Orthodox worship that St. John Chrysostom said that wherever one looks in the Church, he finds the Psalter "first, last, and central."

Here, on the bead and two pendants, Psalm 90 is inscribed. As the letters on the bead are tiny and delicate, and the text is in the old language, here I give you the whole text in English:

1 Whoso dwelleth in the help of the highest shall abide in the
shelter of the God of heaven.

2 He will say unto the Lord, Thou art my defender, and my refuge,
my God, and I will trust in Him.

3 He shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, and from
every mutinous word.

4 With His wings
will He overshadow thee, and thou shalt be safe
under His feathers;
His truth shall compass thee round about like a
shield.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, nor for the arrow
that flieth by day;

6 For the thing that walketh in darkness, for pestilence, or the demon of noon-day.

7 A thousand shall fall beside thee, retailer and ten thousand at thy right
hand, but unto thee it shall not come nigh.

8 But thou shalt behold with thine eyes, and see the reward of sinners.

9 For Thou, Lord, art my hope; Thou hast made the Most High
Thy refuge.

10 There shall no evil happen unto thee, neither shall any plague
come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in
all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee in their hands, that thou hurt not thy foot
against a stone.

13 Thou shalt step upon the asp and basilisk; the lion and the serpent shalt thou tread under thy feet.

14 Because he hath set his hope upon Me, therefore will I deliver
him; I will shelter him, because he hath known My Name.

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will hear him; yea, I am with him
in trouble, I will deliver him, and bring him to glory.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation.
