ORIGINAL 1722 COPPERPLATE ENGRAVING OF THE NINTH INCARNATION OF A HINDU DEITY – PERHAPS VISHNU OR KRISHNA

IN AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY ANTIQUE RECESSED FRAME

10 BY 8 INCH FRAME SIZE, RECESSED ABOUT AN INCH FROM THE GLASS, SEALED AT REAR WITH A WIRE FOR HANGING

IMAGE ABOUT 6 1/2 BY 4 INCHES

The attribution of the engraver and the date of engraving is written on the backing paper and not on the engraving itself, but the engraving is an actual original fragment from a larger engraving with that attribution. It was out of a large French book on oriental religions, but I'm not sure of the title or author.

The engraving process was copperplate. Steel engravings weren't used for about another century.

It depicts the Ninth Incarnation of presumably Vishnu or Krishna.
