The technique of creating intricate designs by embedding precious gold and silver in base metal became popular in Europe during the fifteenth century, with Toledo emerging as the center of production during the Renaissance. Pieces made in the 1960s continued this ancient craft, paying homage through retailer traditional design. Other examples, like this bracelet, imitate just the look of Damascene without employing the actual painstaking technique. During the Mid-Century, tourists visiting Spain would bring Damascene and Damascene-inspired jewelry home as souvenirs and gifts. Today, this jewelry is manufactured mainly in Toledo, Spain and Kyoto, Japan - both of which originally acquired the technique from the same source--the craftsmen of Damascus, Syria more than 2,000 years ago.
