A LITTLE ABOUT THE STAFFORDSHIRE VICARAGE - SEPTEMBER.... (THIS WRITE-UP COMES IN THE BOX.)
"THE OLDEST SURVIVING TRADITION IN BRITAIN, AND POSSIBLY THE WHOLE OF EUROPE, IS THE ABBOTS BROMLEY HORN DANCE. EARLY IN SEPTEMBER, SIX MEN IN A TINY STAFFORSHIRE VILLAGE DON HEAD-DRESSES OF REINDEER ANTLERS AND PERFORM A RITUAL COUNTRY DANCE - NOT JUST ONCE BUT MANY TIMES FROM EARLY MORNING TILL LATE AFTERNOON. ABBOTS BROMLEY USED TO REST ON THE EDGE OF A HUGE FOREST CALLED NEEDWOOD, AND WHEN THE VILLAGERS WERE GRANTED HUNTING RIGHTS IN AD 1125, THEIR LIVELIHOODS WERE SECURED FOR MANY YEARS. IT IS SAID HTA THE HORN DANCE BEGAN AS AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE OCCASION. INCREDIBLY THE ANTLERS USED TODAY ARE AS OLD AS THE DANCE ITSELF, AS A RECENT CARBON-DATING TEST HAS PROVED. WHERE DOES DAVID WINTER'S STAFFORDSHIRE VICARAGE FIT INTO ALL THIS? WELL, THE FIRST DANCE OF THE DAY ALWAYS TAKES PLACE ON THE VICARAGE LAWN! A GOOD ENOUGH REASON AS ANY FOR SCULPTING A VICARAGE, WOULDN'T YOU SAY?"
MANY PEOPLE HAVE FOUND ENORMOUS PLEASURE IN MAKING A COLLECTION OF DAVID WINTER COTTAGES®.
DAVID WINTER COTTAGES® ARE HIGHLY DETAILED MINIATURE HOUSES AND OTHER BUILDINGS, STYLED AFTER TRADITIONAL BRITISH VILLAGE LIFE. THEY ARE INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED BY TALENTED SCULPTOR DAVID WINTER, WHO BEGAN CREATING THE COLLECTION IN THE LATE 1970S THROUGH HIS COLLABORATION WITH JOHN HINE.
GIFTED ENGLISH SCULPTOR DAVID WINTER IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE FOREMOST CREATORS OF MINIATURE ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURES. DAVID FREDERICK SPENCER WINTER WAS BORN ON DECEMBER 18, 1958 IN THE TOWN OF CATTERICK, YORKSHIRE. DAVID WAS INSPIRED retailer BY HIS MOTHER, FAMED BRITISH SCULPTOR FAITH WINTER. IT WAS IN HER STUDIOS THAT DAVID INHERITED HIS CREATIVE SKILLS. INITIALLY MAKING POTTERY AND DECORATIVE TILES, AND THEN ON A JOINT VENTURE WITH JOHN HINE MAKING HERALDIC SHIELDS. THESE WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL BUT PROVED USEFUL IN ATTRACTING DAVID TO DESIGN ON A MINUTE SCALE. HE AND JOHN EXPERIMENTED AND IN 1979 THE FIRST DAVID WINTER COTTAGE - 'THE MILL HOUSE' WAS PRODUCED. DAVID'S WORK FOUND INSTANT ACCEPTABILITY WHEN THEY STARTED TO OFFER THEM TO SELECTED SHOPS IN GREAT BRITAIN AND LATER IN NORTH AMERICA.
PRODUCTION BEGAN IN THE COAL SHED AT THE FOOT OF DAVID'S PARENTS' HOUSE. JOHN HINE DID THE TALKING AND SELLING. THE CONTRASTING CHARACTERS OF DAVID AND JOHN, THE QUIET UNASSUMING ARTIST AND THE CHARISMATIC MARKETER, COMPLEMENTED EACH OTHER PERFECTLY. INITIALLY, ALL COTTAGES WERE PAINTED BY AUDREY WHITE IN HER HOME. AS DAVID, AND ASSOCIATED CRAFTSMEN AND CRAFTSWOMEN'S SKILLS INCREASED OVER TIME, SO DID THE POPULARITY OF THE COTTAGES. IN 1981 LARGER PREMISES WERE FOUND AT BORDEN, AND THEN LATER TO EGGARS HILL. HE HAS RECEIVED WORLDWIDE ACCLAIM. IN 1988 THE COMPANY WAS AWARDED THE QUEENS AWARD FOR EXPORT.
