The pearls of this size and shape are often referred to as Kasumi or Edison pearls after the pioneers of the pearl growing technique. Nowadays the description nucleated or reborn is coming to use. Most freshwater pearls are nacre all through, but these very large pearls are nucleated. That means they are started with embedding a round core of mother of pearl inside the oyster. The mollusk will then coat the core with a layer of nacre and nurture it as long as several years before harvested and processed.
