This painting was inspired by 2 art forms that I'd always admired... vintage Tiki Polynesian Landscapes and cheesy Elvis' on Black Velvet. I'd always wanted to own an Elvis on black velvet, but, the quality of some of the paintings were sometimes dubious. So, I decided to paint my own. I've had retailer this idea floating around in my head for years but just couldn't find the time to do it. Nothing like a pandemic and a lockdown to finally get the opportunity and time to start it!

My technique had always been to build light onto dark anyways, but I was not prepared to take the time to perfect painting on velvet. So I just went with what I know, painting on cold press illustration board... in this case, black board. I work in mixed media, starting with prismacolors for my "underpainting", then slowly building up my light areas with acrylics. It's kind of a strange melding of 2 different subject matters, but then again, there was Elvis' "Blue Hawaii". Anyways, I'm pleased with the final piece and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did painting it.
