Mictlantecuhtli Obsidian Stone Disc
Mictlantecuhtli is known as the "lord of the underworld". Mictlantecuhtli is the representation of the place of the discarnate and death. The place after life here on Earth.
To the Mexica (native people of Mexico), death represented transition and regeneration... the other side of the coin of what we are currently experiencing…part of the life cycle…the shadow that we are all accompanied with. There was no fear of death as it was expected that it would at any moment transition to... The last image is that of the original Mictlantecuhtli disc that is now exhibited in a museum. This disc is inspired on the original found made of stone.
Obsidian stone was one of the most used stones in Mexico. It is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as a rock. When polished, it becomes highly sharp as glass. Prior to the arrival of the European, the people in Mexico utilized the obsidian stone for spiritual purposes such as rituals for meditation, protection against negativity, and as mirrors to reflect their inner self. Obsidian stone was also used to make weapons due to its sharpness. Obsidian is a form of volcanic stone that for centuries was utilized by the Mexica (natives of Mexico) as a stone for protection and self-reflection. It was also used to make mirrors in a spiritual sense; to make weapons (blades and knives). Beads and figures made of obsidian were buried with the deceased for protection in the afterworld.
Obsidian stone was placed in tombs with the deceased as a stone to protect them through their journey in the afterworld. Vessels and objects were carved out of obsidian were also placed as offerings in tombs. There are variations on obsidian stone in Mexico: black, red, green, golden sheen, black with gray tones, and a rainbow colored obsidian stone called "manto huichol". This last variation is found in the state of Jalisco.
This golden sheen obsidian stone was found in the central region of Mexico. The Mictlantecuhtli disc was hand carved and polished by Maestro Artesano~Artisan Master Martinez, who is a talented and experienced artisan in making pre-Hispanic replicas and art in retailer the state of Mexico.
