Victorian Large Easter Egg Mold Blown Glass

These Eggs were used to decorate Victorian houses and would also be given as gifts for Easter. Sometimes Victorian women would also use them as "darning Eggs" for mending socks. The smaller sized blown glass eggs were sometimes used in Victorian farmhouses in the Hen house to coax a stubborn hen to lay her eggs. The eggs used to coax a hen to lay were usually not decorated. The eggs were made by heating glass to Moulton temperatures. The hot glass was then placed on a rod and mouth blown either alone or into a mold. If the eggs were made for decoration they would then be hand painted. Most of the paint on most of the eggs you will find today is very worn off due to the process of Cold Painting, meaning there was no glaze placed over the paint, and since the eggs are very old and people washed them and rubbed a bit too hard over the years, unfortunately they also washed away most of the painted decorations retailer too.

This Egg Was made for decorative purposes. The Egg is a Large Size more like the Size of a Goose Egg. At one time this Egg had Lovely Purple Flowers and Green Leaves and Stems adorning it. The flowers, stems, and leaves have mostly worn off and only remnants of them as well as remnants of the Green Leaves and Stems remain. This egg does retain Most of it's Raised Gold Lettering which spells out EASTER GREETINGS. Eggs like this one that feature Raised Lettering and Decoration are made by blowing the hot glass on the rod into a mold, therefore you will also notice that this eggs has a Slightly Raised Mold Line running around the side of the egg. Eggs with Raised Lettering and decoration are Much More Rare and Much Harder To Find than those with Flat Painted decorations and lettering. There is a Rough Pontil mark on the end of the Egg which is where the blowing rod was removed when the egg was finished. The Backside of the egg is all white with No decoration.
