Beautiful 19th Century Gaudy Welsh Teapot. Antique Victorian Ironstone Imari (oyster) pattern. Cobalt blue, black, red and gold lustre. The pot is unusual in shape and has a beautiful rich brown underglaze. It also has lovely gold beading detail.
Gaudy Welsh first appeared in Staffordshire, England around the late 1820's. The main colours chosen for decoration were Orange,(dark and light) greens and cobalt blue, along with gold and pink lustre. The Welsh potteries who were in fierce competition with the Staffordshire potteries for the open market, were alarmed when large consignments of Gaudy Welsh appeared for sale in Welsh auctions. Swansea immediately followed suit and started to produce their own Gaudy Welsh. It was made in the Cambrian pottery under Lewis Llewellyn Dillwyn and also at the South Wales pottery or Llanelly pottery which started production in 1839.
As with much of this pottery it is unmarked but the style suggests the mid 1800's and other items in a similar style have been identified as Lingard Pottery.
height approx 25.5 cm cm
length (spout to handle) 22 cm
width 24.5 cm
Excellent condition for it's age with no chips or cracks or damage. There is a small chip to the spout that is under the glaze and so original to the piece. It has a small amount of wear to the gold and some crazing but over all it is in extraordinarily good condition. Please look carefully at the pics.
This is a very beautiful teapot in this beautiful design and would make a lovely gift. It would be practical too!
