Description

Product Name: Rare Antique English Porcelain Watercress Bowl and Saucer, Britannia Pottery, Burslem, Transferware, c. 1916-1931, retailer

A beautifully aged and very much preloved antique English watercress dish and its saucer produced by North Staffordshire pottery S. Johnson Ltd, Burslem, England sometime between 1916 and 1931.

The Britannia retailer Pottery closed its doors for the last time in 1939.

The transferware rose motif has been placed slightly off center, to left left. The saucer has three large rose motifs around the perimeter of the saucer as well. The draining dish has multiple drilled holes to drain the water through, This lovely dish has stood the test of time, although it shows a little of its age and of much previous use. It has a beautiful patina. These would be a lovely addition to an existing set of the same design or a similar one, and would be a great addition to a traditional antique dinner service. Watercress draining bowls are no longer seen for sale as far as I know.

MEASUREMENTS
The under saucer measures 8 3/4 inches (22.5 cm) in diameter
The main draining dish measures 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) in diameter and is 2 inches (5 cm) tall. when standing on the saucer it is 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) tall.
Weight of the two together is 747 grams.

CONDITION
The condition of these items is reasonable considering their age; there are no cracks; just a few unseen chips on the undersides which cannot be seen when in use. The surface of the glaze is crazed (seen under magnification) and there are some pale rust colored discoloration marks on the saucer and the dish (slight tea staining). Please refer to photos for a better visual description.
