This is an American standard that states that at least 1/20 part of the weight of the piece must be made of 14-carat gold (gold 585). So it is not a thin layer that peels off quickly, but a proper alloy. This creates a high quality that is well tolerated by people who cannot tolerate other metals other than gold.
