Antique Rare French, Napoleonic Era Cut Throat Razor Boxed Set, Two Razors and A Strop, Sharpening Leather retailer for Razor, 1800s, This is a very rare antique French razor strop in a wood box with two cut throat razors.
This is a very rare antique French razor strop in a wood box with two cut throat razors. From the early 1800s, the Napoleonic age, according to information researched.
This amazingly old, early 19th century (1800s) French razor set comprises a wood box which has an angled sliding compartment and inside are two cut throat razors, unmarked by maker, but both exceedingly sharp! Also in the box is a set of instructions in French on maintenance of retailer the razors and the sharpening of the blades. On the exterior of the box; one side contains a leather strip, this side is rough for the first pass, and the second side consists of a sort of glass paper which is smooth for finishing the stropping. Both sides are dusty from age. There is a lovely smooth wooden handle on the end and the maker's mark impressed into the wood on the rectangular strop below it. This I cannot make out for the most part, but I can see the word 'Jonzac'. Jonzac is in the Charentes, SW France.
The strop and its blades comes in its original cardboard box which is now a bit tattered and one end is absent but the other end is still in place, tatty as it is. The box is red on one side and dark navy or black on the other side and has a kind of embossed look to it but this is all too faded to see properly.
Neither of the straight edged razors has a makers mark but someone has etched a name or names on one of the handles but this is also difficult to read although I can make out one name which is CORNIEU. Both, as mentioned, are very sharp. There is a little rusting on each blade. One blade has the remnants of a sticker on the handle which may once have carried the maker's name.
As an antique item, I think this is in a really good condition considering its age. A wonderful collectors item; add to an already established collection or start a new one. A fabulous item to add to a glass fronted display cabinet. A little antique French history to adorn your home.
