Maxine Noel, born in 1946 on the Birdtail Reserve in southwestern Manitoba, is a Canadian First Nations artist from the Santee and Oglala heritage. She was given the Sioux name Ioyan Mani which means "walk beyond". A self-taught artist and the oldest of eleven children, her mother and grandmother encouraged her to draw. Maxine first worked as a legal secretary in Edmonton and Toronto before becoming a full-time artist in 1979. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across Canada. She works with serigraphy, lithography, etching, painting and cast paper. - Wikipedia
