Vintage Sterling retailer Belt Buckle CHINESE LONGEVITY SYMBOL; Engraved and Elegant!

The gleaming cutout center of this sterling belt buckle is the Chinese symbol for long life retailer, and this piece was definitely made to last a long time. The silver is a good thickness, not quite 1/16", and it has clearly been gently handled; apart from a scant handful of the usual faint surface scratches it's in excellent condition. The border around the symbol is beautifully engraved with arabesques and a textured background; please take a look at the close-up.

The buckle is 2" x 1 7/16" and the opening for the belt is 1 1/8", so it will comfortably accommodate a standard 1"-wide belt. I believe that the loop for the belt is not silver; by daylight, it has the look of brass that was once silver-plated, and it isn't stamped sterling, unlike the body of the buckle. As that's the part of the belt that would take the most stress, it makes good sense to me.

Last but not least, when I looked up this symbol, I found sites that offered "birthday" as one of the meanings attached to it. Which would make it a dandy birthday gift . . . Cheers!
