Description

Product Name: The Griffin retailer Pincushion

Embroiderers often made their own embroidery tools such as pincushions and needle cases and embellished them with their own artistry and craftsmanship. These delicate pin cushions are worked in brightly colored silk utilizing Queen Stitch, the most complicated and time-consuming of the canvas-work stitches. The design elements feature geometric patterns or a strawberry motif. The exact design is repeated on the back of each pincushion.
Some of the ribbons attached to the original pincushions are marked with the maker's initials, "PG", perhaps for Phoebe Griffen, who married Marshfield Parsons of Lyme, Connecticut in October of 1793. She died in that community on December 25, 1828, aged 94. She was Col. Marshfield Parsons's fourth wife.

Included in this kit: 27 count natural linen, Silk floss, Needle, Silk ribbon, Silk couching thread, Acid free backing material, retailer Graphs and Complete instructions to finish all three of three of these reproductions of Phoebe Griffen's lovely silk Queen Stitch pincushions. From the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum.
