“Gold-filled” is a USA industry standard that legally requires 1/20th, or 5% pure gold by weight. It's a strictly regulated process that involves pressure bonding multiple layers of solid 14k gold with extreme heat over a core of high quality jeweler's brass resulting in a durable, quality real gold product.

14k gold-filled can last beautifully for many years. But we've found that the wrong chemicals, when left retailer on the surface of your pieces, can cause the gold to darken more quickly than it should. There are chemicals in a lot of things (even you!), and it's important to be aware of the factors that could potentially cause tarnishing. We've included a list below of some of the worst and most common factors that cause tarnish.

14K GOLD FILLED VS GOLD PLATED:

The layer of gold alloy on gold-plated jewelry is so minuscule it is barely noticeable in the above image. Gold-filled jewelry has 100x more gold alloy than gold plated and because that layer is so much thicker, it means gold-filled jewelry lasts longer and stands up to wear and tear better than gold plated. All it would take is one small scratch on a gold-plated piece to expose the jeweler's brass underneath.
