Raku Ceramic retailer Box

This raku fired ceramic box was hand-built from slabs and constructed so that the lid fits only one way and "locks" into position. The mirror finish features a rainbow of colors that is accented by a matte copper appliqued border and medallion.

Raku is a alternative firing technique where clay pieces are pulled from the kiln while glowing red hot, about 1800°F. They are placed in a metal container of combustible materials that ignite on contact and are covered to smoke. This method of firing brings out rich blacks, retailer intricate crackle patterns, lustrous metallics, and flashes of color to create a unique, one of a kind work of art.
