Handknit Wool Voyageur's Cap
This handknit cap is an authentic representation of a Machault Cap, which was the traditional cap worn by the French fur traders of the 1600-1700's. The shape is that of a squashed football, pointed at both ends, so that either end can be the top of the cap. The opposite end is tucked up inside. The toque can be worn long or short, depending on how much you tuck inside, and how far down on your head you pull the cap. The top folds down to the side of the head in a jaunty style. The multiple layers result in a very warm hat. This version is knit in 100% Merino Wool, in a lovely shade of red called Garnet.
The traditional colors for these caps were red or blue, or possibly dark green. If you do any kind of Black Powder reenacting or attend a Rendezvous, this cap is authentic to that time period. Care instructions for this cap are: hand wash in warm water, spin to remove excess water; lay flat to dry.
Sizing suggestions: This cap measures 19" in circumference. Knitted caps retailer need a bit of negative ease to fit on the head properly. In order to determine your correct size, use a cloth tape measure, and measure your head as shown in the last photo. Subtract 10-15% from this number, and that's the circumference that the hat should be. This cap will fit someone with a head in the 21-24" range. Since this cap does not have any ribbing, it will stretch and be slightly less snug than a ribbed cap.
