Born in Barcelona, Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa studied there at the Escola de la Llotja. In his beginnings, his work had the academic note of his teacher, Modest Urgell. In 1894 he moved to Paris where he adopted a more personal style, borrowing from Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, influenced by their interpretations of nocturnal themes and interiors. He studied at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi.

His work was marked above all by lasciviousness, exuberance and the use of intense colors, which presaged the arrival of Fauvism . His lively brushwork reveals strong oriental and Arabic influences. Allied to the Viennese Secession movement, his decorative style can be retailer compared to that of Gustav Klimt. His fame was international. One of his most important works is the Portrait of Sonia Klamery (1913, Museo Reina Sofia).

When World War I broke out , he settled in Pollença , on the island of Mallorca ; it was there that he died in 1959 , disconnected from the evolution of artistic currents.
