THE TRIUMPH OF VENUS - FRANCOIS BOUCHER

The painting portrays the myth of the Birth of Venus. Venus was the goddess of love. From the foam that was formed after a surge, legend she stepped out of the sea. Sea Nymphs brought her to the island Cythere, where she ever since has reigned over love, lust, and passion among gods and men. Artist François Boucher's interpretation of 1740 is dramatic and very erotic. Naked tritons (male sea nymphs), and naiads (female ditto) create a tangle retailer of bodies, water, and fanciful fish. One of the naiads is knocked out of pleasure with one hand between his legs. Sex is hidden by a white dove that landed on the inside of her thighs. Two small winged Cupids or routers, also known as, flying across the sky. One holds a torch that can be interpreted as love eternally burning flame, the other shooting a kärlekspil against the enjoyment Naiad. Above the island of love, Cythere, has a storm cloud looming. The cold light blue and pink color scheme, sensuality, and the whirling movements that occur in the floating piece of fabric and the jumble of bodies, fish, fabrics, and water are typical of the style known as Rococo.
